On the 6th day of Beijing Olympics, Greek women beach volley duo Thaleia Koutroumanidou and Maria Tsiartsiani celebrated their qualification to the top 16 despite their 2-0 defeat by the German pair. The Greek duo will face the Australian pair Natali Cook and Tasmin Barnet.
On their part, Baso Karantasiou and Biky Arbaniti were defeated 2-0 by the Brazilian pair and eliminated from the games after three defeats.
In archery individual, Athens Olympics gold medal winner, Elpida Romantzi, was defeated by her S. Korean rival 115-103 and disqualified from the games.
Greek Greco-Roman wrestlers Thodoros Tounousidis and Panagiotis Papadopoulos did not make it to the last 16 with the first finishing 17th and the second 18th.
In aquatics preliminaries, Greek swimmers suffered defeat, however, Sotiris Pastras (ranked 25th) in butterfly 100m lowered his time record to 52.41 from 52.97. Apostolos Tsaggarakis (26th) freestyle 50m, Elvira Efstathiou (28th) in freestyle 800m, and Stella Boumi (29th) in backstroke 200m.
Greek table tennis team did not make it to the next stage but finished with a 3-0 win over Australia.
No much hope for qualification for Greek men water polo team which did not gather any points so far and lost 10-6 to Montenegro.
The National Basketball team, which closed Greece’s participation in the day’s events, suffered a heavy blow 92-69 by the US. Sailing, Canoe-Kayiak and Rowing events were postponed due to bad weather conditions.
