Anorthosis FC of Famagusta clinched its 13th championship on Sunday, three games before the end of the Championship.
Anorthosis, a refugee club from Famagusta a coastal city occupied since the 1974 Turkish invasion which resulted to the occupation of Cyprus` northern third, secured the championship, after APOEL FC, second in the Championship, lost on Saturday to AEK by 1-0.
The Famagusta club finished yesterday’s match with Omonia AC with goalless draw, maintaining its remarkable undefeated record.
This year's Cypriot Championship was conducted in a new format divided into two phases. In the first phase, 14 teams are giving 26 matches. At the end of the phase the last two teams are relegated. In the second play-off phase, 12 teams are divided in groups of four. The team that finishes the marathon first is declared champion, while the team that finished last in the third group is relegated.
So far FC Olympiakos and Nea Salamina, another refugee club from Famagusta, were relegated during the first phase, while FC Aris of Limassol is set to join them to the second division.
