Every Greek and Cypriot alike is supporting Marcos Baghdatis at this year’s Wimbledon Tennis Championships. The 23 year old was born in Limassol of Cyprus to a Lebanese father and Greek Cypriot mother. He has battled his way through match after match, to now be ranked at number 15 on the Association of Tennis Professionals.
His family were the first in the whole of Limassol to own a house with a tennis court outside. Although he went to Limassol’s Grammar School, he later went to France to train at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. He turned professional in 2003 and has not looked back since.
Baghdatis had a 3 sets to one victory over Belgium’s Steve Darcis on the opening day of Wimbledon 2008. Tomorrow he takes on Thomas Johansson to see who will be one step closer to winning the highly coveted title.
He may have a tough time competing against world champion Roger Federer, who confirmed that he is the title favourite when he slammed his opponent in his opening match. But Cyprus has long awaited a chance to shine and Baghdatis might be the man to do it; he aims to do his country proud by bringing home the prize.
