Greece made a comfortable start to their FIFA World Cup qualifying bid with a Group 2 victory in Luxembourg.
Points secure
Vassilis Torosidis and Fanis Gekas found the target late in the first half before a 77th-minute Angelos Charisteas penalty wrapped up the points for Otto Rehhagel's side. They continue their attempt to repeat their sole World Cup qualification of 1994 when they visit Latvia on Wednesday; Luxembourg travel to Switzerland.
Opening goals
Luxembourg, fielding a solitary striker in Joël Kitenge, resisted early Greek advances as Jeff Strasser kept them organised at the back. But a mistake down the left side of their defence was eventually capitalised on by Torosidis -- leaving marker Kim Kitzinger standing to head in a Charisteas cross. Then, moments before the break, Gekas was sent clear on the counterattack and held his nerve to beat goalkeeper Jonathan Joubert.
Penalty
Rehhagel swapped his captain, Angelos Basinas, for Dimitris Salpingidis at half-time and the new forward brought extra strength to the Greece attack. Nikos Liberopoulos was denied by Joubert just before being forced off by a knock. Finally, with 13 minutes remaining, Eric Hoffmann's foul on Gekas resulted in a spot-kick which was converted by Charisteas.
