Otto Rehhagel reserved glowing praise for Olympiakos defender Avraam Papadopoulos after he starred for Greece during its 3-0 victory over Moldova on Saturday.
The 23 year-old defender produced a superb performance in Greece's three-man defence against the Eastern Europeans, timing his tackles well and providing consistent cover for fellow center-backs Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Traianos Dellas.
Papadopoulos made his competitive debut for the national team in September, when he was a surprise starter in Greece's World Cup Qualifier against Latvia.
In the place of midfielder and regular captain Angelos Basinas, he looked assured within the confines of the international arena and helped his country to an impressive 2-0 victory in Riga.
He again looked comfortable on Saturday night, in the slightly more familiar surroundings of the Giorgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
"He was the team's best player." Rehhagel said of his performance against Moldova.
The German manager was speaking at a post-match press conference and was quoted by his football federation's official website as he spoke of the young defender.
"He is disciplined, a fighter and when he needed to, joined up in attack."
It has been a rapid rise to the international arena for Papadopoulos, who impressed for Aris in the Greek Super League last season.
His exploits attracted the attention of both Panathinaikos and Olympiakos during the summer, before he opted to join the Piraeus-based outfit.
