It is July 1974 and on a bright, sunny morning, the Turkish army has invaded the village of Kyrenia in Cyprus. For many people, this means an end to life as they know it. But for some, it is a chance to begin living again. Koki, a young villager, feared and hated by her neighbours for her startling red hair, has spent her life in shadow. But held captive in the house to which the women of Kyrenia have been brought, she can at last speak to them as an equal. She can tell them her story of a summer long ago. The young, Turkish shoe-maker who came to the village and took her heart away with him when he left. And how she has longed for him all these years and never known why he left, what took him away. Adem Berker is a Turkish soldier and for him, the invasion of his former home is an opportunity to seek out the woman he has loved for so many years. Waiting for a chance to return, his only thought has been of her. And so, by cover of darkness, he searches every house, every pathway for a glimpse of that head of flames. For Richard, growing old and grey in a dank bedsit in the centre of London, where the underground trains shake the foundations, the invasion of Cyprus stirs memories of his time as a British pilot, of a woman, a child and a secret it is becoming all too difficult to keep.

Author Biography

Christy Lefteri was born in London in 1980 to Greek Cypriot parents who moved to London in 1974 during the Turkish invasion. She completed a degree in English and a Masters in creative writing at Brunel University. She taught English to foreign students and then became a secondary school teacher before leaving to pursue a PhD and to write. She is also studying to become a psychotherapist.

SEEME AWARD Nomination!!!

I’ve got some great music news of my own this week; the dance remix of my track “I Believe” has won a nomination for Best New Dance Track at the 2010 SEE Awards!

This annual award show is South East Europe’s biggest industry gathering and celebrates all things music with 26 categories covering dance, pop and hip-hop as well celebrating the live circuit, culminating in a live ceremony taking place on Friday, September 17th, 2010.

The “I Believe - Sunrise Remix” courtesy of producer Freezabox features in category 11. <<Best SEE Dance Track / New>> Very exciting stuff and I’m certainly in good company with Greek superstar Sakis Rouvas also in the running!

This week in Xclusive…

Cyprus will be getting a head start for the next Eurovision Song Contest as the Cypriot representative for 2011 will be chosen as early as next month! Going for a different strategy this time round, the powers that be will be championing the winner of new TV talent show Performance; granting them the honour of flying the Cypriot flag in Germany next year!

The reality talent show, which first aired in March, will see nine acts competing in the final on the 10th September. The finalists are Marios Charalambous, Costa Ioannides, Christos Milordos, Daphne Seisou, Nicole Nikolaidou, Louis Panagiotou, Annita Skoutela, Stella Stylianou and Malvina Charalambidi and were all chosen ‘X Factor’ style through televoting and a celebrity judging panel, which included 1985 Eurovision Song Contest representative Lia Vissi. In 2010, Cyprus qualified for the Eurovision Final for the first time since 2005 with Jon Lilygreen & the Islanders finishing 21st with their song Life Looks Better in Spring.

Friends Aniston and Cox reunited!

Greek- American actress Jennifer Aniston will pay a visit to old Friend Courteney Cox in TV sitcom Cougar Town!

Jennifer will portray a therapist who is being seen by Courteney’s character in the first episode of the new series, to be broadcast in the US next month. ABC said Jen would only be in one episode.

The two actresses starred together for 10 years on the hugely successful TV comedy series Friends.

Courteney is in her second season of Cougar Town, where she plays a character hungry for younger men.

Jen is promoting her new movie, “The Switch.”

This week in Xclusive…

Pandemonium broke out at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus last Thursday when superstar Sakis Rouvas arrived on the island ahead of his concert at the Pafiakos Stadium in Paphos. Hundreds of screaming fans crowded the airport to catch a glimpse of their idol as he made his way to his chauffeur driven car, some lucky enough to get up close and personal as Sakis took the time to give autographs. While in Cyprus he also made a pit stop in Limassol to attend a fashion shoot for his new clothes collection. Speaking on his time in Cyprus he said

“This is the first time I have visited Paphos and haven’t had time to see anything yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing the town with the mayor”.

Tamta is temporally putting down the microphone for a short stint at acting. The Greek, Georgian born singer is set to appear in the third series of Greek sitcom “Polykatikia” in a role not far removed from herself; a successful singer!

London has always been a magnet for the biggest stars across the globe, especially when it comes to music! Now it is the turn of one of Greece’s most successful exports to head over the pond and visit us in good old blighty! Have I got you guessing yet? Michalis Hatziyannis’ first English language album is ever closer and I can reveal that as well as a collection of brand new material, English versions of some of his biggest hits will be featured on the album; “To S’Ayapw” (Now That You’re Gone), “Mi Me Koitas” (Eyes Of A Sinner), “Emeis Oi Duo San Ena” (Heart Surrender), “To Party” (One In A Million), “Pio Poli” (Suddenly) και “Heria Psila” (Everyone Dance) all making the playlist!

Hatziyannis will be premiering this latest project in Germany, having strong ties there. The popular Cypriot singer-songwriter recorded several songs there for his crossover debut, including his first English track “More Than Beautiful” under an affiliation with We Love Music/Universal Music Germany. His ninth studio album is simply entitled “Michalis”! Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long for it here!

Britney’s’ Back!

According to U.S. music producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, fans of Britney Spears will have a lot to smile about and soon! Rumours of a new album have been circling since the beginning of the year but nothing as yet had been confirmed until now. According to the successful music maker; “We’re getting things together. I’ve actually been doing tracks that I love and I can’t wait to go into full production mode…” The producers’ admission during a Ustream session will have Britney fans very excited indeed!

American rock chick PINK gets all romantic in a new alternative video clip for the hit ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’ titled ‘Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour 2010′. Unlike the first video that focuses on the quarrel and separation, the new video is all humour and shows Pink as a Giant in love! On/off husband Carey Hart also makes an appearance in the new version as a dwarf!

Sakis Rouvas, isn’t called Mister “Shake-It” for nothing! As well as maintaining a successful music career, Sakis has also managed the enviable task of establishing himself as a prime time presenter, an up-and-coming actor, while also juggling the demands being a husband and father!(I feel exhausted just thinking about it).

But now there’s another string to add to his ever blossoming bow: this autumn, the star will unveil ‘The Sakis Rouvas Collection” - a clothesline for both men and women. Twelve months in the making, Sakis himself took a proactive approach to this latest project, proposing his ideas and ensuring his own signature stamp comes through the various pieces. The collection is tipped to reflect Sakis’ personal style on fashion; one that emphasises freedom, comfort and elegance and which he hopes will see the public adapting each piece to their own style and tone. The Collection will be available exclusively in Sprider Stores (located in Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania) this October.

After appearances in “Thalassa People’s Stage” in Athens, concerts in the “Politeia Live Clubbing” in Thessaloniki and performances with Eli Kokkinou, Despina is now preparing for her summer tour! If you’re heading for the motherland this week you’ll be in good company as Despina will be stopping by for two concert dates in Cyprus on the 6^th and 7^th August! The rest of the month will see Vandi rejoining Kokkinou for a series of concerts in mainland Greece and its islands before closing the show in Athens on the 25^th August!

Fan’s death leaves Peter Andre grieving

Peter Andre has been left grieving after one of his oldest fans passed away. The Aussie singer says he was heartbroken to learn that Twitter’s oldest user, 104-year-old Ivy Bean, had died.

He struck up a friendship with the old lady on the social networking site and said she became like a “grandmother” to him. Writing in his column for new! Magazine, he said, “I was heartbroken to hear that Ivy Bean, the oldest person on Twitter, passed away last week at the age of 104.

“As most of you know, Ivy and I had become friends over the last year and I loved her. She was like a grandmother figure and such an inspiration to me. A lot of older people have no interest in the modern world and I thought it was amazing that she embraced Twitter.”

But the 37-year-old Mysterious Girl singer said he was grateful that he got the chance to speak to her one last time before her death. He added, “Ivy’s carer, Pat Wright, called me a couple of days before she died to say that she wasn’t feeling too good and I got to speak to Ivy one final time. “I told her I loved her and how wonderful she was and I’m so glad I got the chance to do that. I’ll miss you, Beany.”

New Michael Jackson album due in November

Posthumous collection to feature 10 previously unreleased songs from the Jackson archive

If Michael Jackson mania has faded in the 13 months since his death, get ready for it to begin again. Plans are in place for a new album from the Jackson vaults – a collection of unreleased songs, due in November.

According to Rolling Stone, the compilation will include 10 previously unreleased tracks, chosen from more than 100 songs that Jackson’s former manager, Frank DiLeo, claims are in the archives. It’s not clear whether the compilation will feature B-sides and out-takes, or if fans will be expected to pay for alternate versions of old hits. The first posthumous Michael Jackson album, last year’s This Is It, interspersed his greatest hits with alternate mixes, a spoken-word track, and an unreleased song, co-written with Paul Anka.

DiLeo confirmed comments made by Tommy Mottola, former head of Sony Music, who said that Jackson had “over-recorded” for each of his albums by making 10 to 20 extra tracks, any of which “could have been as big a hit as the ones that came out”. Jackson’s estate has signed a $250m, seven-year deal to release this music through Sony Music, and DiLeo insists there’s a little of everything, from Thriller out-takes to new tracks recorded with Will.I.Am and Akon. “There are a couple of songs we recorded for the Bad album that we had to cut that are just sensational,” he said.

Last week, producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, who worked on Jackson’s final studio album, confirmed that he was working on a posthumous Jackson collection. “It’s definitely going to come,” he told VladTV, “but it takes time. You got to do a lot of the red tape.” It is unclear if this is the same compilation due in November.
