Tony Neophytou LGR - Monday 17th of March 2008
The Greek Eurovision artist Kalomoira has conquered London's definitive Chart.
The infectiously catchy R'n'B ethno song 'Secret Combination' is enjoying widespread air-play on the LGR - three weeks on the trot conquering the Number One slot!
Kalomoira was triumphant in the selection process, which was made in Greece on February 27 defeating her rivals Kostas Martakis and Chrispa.
The slick choreographed fine dancing capabilities of Kalomoira and four male dancers - are definitely a vote-winner for Greece. Now for a bold prediction: I would say a minimum of a top 7 placing in the Serbian Eurovision final.
Greece will perform at the Eurovision Semi-Final on May 20, with the aim to qualify for the latter final stages on May 24.
The highest new entry is Sarbel 'Eho Trelathi' which has gone straight to number two. The big new tune from the hotly anticipated album, is proving a hit with the listener who is starved of anything new from the London Cypriot.
The spicey pop song fuses a mixture of the Oriental/Greek rhythms, with a soft rock vibe. The album - which will feature 'Eho Trelathi' is to be a follow-up to the Eurovision CD-single 'Yassou Maria' which came a respectable seventh in Helsinki.
Third placed is Alkistis Protopsalti 'Pame Havai' - for a second consecutive week, with this feel-good summer tune, so 'all aboard on the London Greek Radio airwaves... destination... Havai!' The song is featured on the album 'Sto Oreotero Simio'.
Limassol newcomer artist Konstantinos Papas has joined forces with Sofia Arvaniti singing the up-beat duet 'Mpora' - gaining a further four places - to number four. A fresh tune with quite a few addictive beats - a good summer song! Is it time yet to book your holiday to the island of 'music'...?
Eleftheria Arvanitaki 'Min Orkiseze' has fallen to three with this classy, melodic pop ballad which is the Greek version to the Italian song 'Come Monna Lisa'.
Konstantinos Galanos has moved into the top 10 with the sweet-flavoured 'An M' Agapas'.
Cypriot pop sensation Michalis Hatzgiannis (Pio Poly, No. 7) goes into a third week lifted to seventh.
Paschalis Terzis 'Isos' has drifted outwards to No. 8 (falling four places) with the up-lifting tsifteteli listed on the superb platinum album 'I Diafora'.
Katerina Neocleous 'Chakara Makara' is at No. 10 for this good pop rock song. What does 'Chakara Makara' actually mean? Well, a kind Cypriot gentle-man had told me it formulated the telling of a story, the equivalence of 'Once Upon a Time'.
"The response to the CD has exceeded all expectations. I'm not sure even the Beatles had three songs in the top 10! - Spokesperson for the Cypriot Academy, the cultural organisation that produced the CD with funding from the UK National Lottery. "It's wonderful to see Cypriots taking such pride in their distinct and shared cultural heritage."
Hro Feat. Gigi D'Alessio 'Amore Mio' has climbed a further five spots to eleven in this fetching duet - sung in Italian and Greek, a truly beautiful class act.
Pop singer Tamta had a massive hit with the catchy modern number 'Agapise Me' in 2007 - has re-entered the chart at twelve.
The pop star Sakis Rouvas has a re-entry with '18 Iparhi Agapi Edo' at number thirteen.
New entry for Peggy Zina 'Dio Xeni' into No. 14 which hails from her latest album 'Trekse'.
'Tilliria’ by Stevie Violaris and Manos Hadjimanolis has fallen to sixteenth. The big hit tune from 'The Cypriot Collection' had lead to a renaissance of the traditional Cypriot folk song albeit with English words.
Panos Psaltis 'Aggele Mou' (15) has broken all records with a twenty two weeks in the definitive chart for London - the former number one has a positive response by the listeners via emails and phone-calls.
Notis Sfakianakis 'To Noima Tou Kosmou' (19) has a further re-entry from the 'Mnhmes' album which went platinum in February of this year.
How the chart is determined?
The determinant factors to this chart are (i) listener song requests, (ii) big new hits which emanate in Greece and Cyprus (iii) DJ/producer choices, (iv) LGR on-line votes.
